There are many conditions that can cause ear pain including ear infections, a condition that is known as ‘Glue Ear’, damage to the ear, earwax accumulation, a foreign body getting stuck in the ear, jaw problems, and referred pain of dental origin.
Ear infections can cause the ear to become swollen and painful when it is pushed against a pillow during sleep. This is especially problematic for side sleepers, where this is their sleeping posture. With referred pain of dental origin, pain is exacerbated when lying down due to pressure that is being applied to the face and ear. ‘Glue Ear’, or Otitis Media Effusion, is caused by fluid accumulation deep inside the ear, causing temporary hearing loss and occasional pain.
